This session will focus on the changing discharge regulations globally that ultimately impact what countries are doing to treat their leachate. The discussion of leachate regulations will focus on the U.S., Europe, and China. Europe has been seen as leaders in environmental regulations, but China is now strengthening its environmental regulations and landfills are being required to treat their leachate beyond drinking water standards. Other developing countries are beginning to develop leachate regulations and will look for guidance on suitable treatment technologies. An overview of what treatment technologies can be used to meet the increasing regulations will be discussed.
