Technical Panel: Challenges and Approaches to Improving Connectivity and Network Efficiency for Heterogeneous Tactical Networks (Room 316)

Tactical networking environments are typically heterogeneous and composed of multiple networking technologies with vastly different capabilities. The problems are further exacerbated by limitations in terms of bandwidth, latency, reliability, stability, and connectivity. To help address these challenges, NATO has established a multinational Research Task Group (IST-124) consisting of members from Finland, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States. This panel will consist of members from this NATO task group, who will identify the challenges facing these types of heterogeneous networks and approaches being taken to help address these challenges. Three key topical areas will be covered, including improving connectivity and routing, improving Quality of Service, particularly across multiple network types, and integration of sensor networks. Topics will also include coalition networks and associated challenges, as well as methods for experimentation for evaluating different solutions.
