Construction SuperConference 2017

E07 Cybersecurity Risk Management and Best Practices, with a Specific Focus on the Unique Needs of the Construction and Legal Industries (Room Chopin 1)

Cyberattacks are on the rise in every business sector. Any construction company with access to the internet is at risk of a cyberattack and resulting data breach. Construction companies are storing increasing amounts of sensitive information and, in addition, data sharing between participants in a construction project has increased in popularity. Thus, construction companies could be at increased risk of liability in the event of a data breach. Similar and other unique considerations apply to law firms representing construction clients. This session will include a discussion of recent trends in cybersecurity including examples of hacking and social engineering attempts; recommendations for information security practices including Written Information Security Programs and Incident Response Plans; regulatory requirements and considerations; and cyber risk management through employee education and training, contract management, and insurance. A portion of the discussion will cover the specific risks applicable to law firms representing construction clients.

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand trending and emergent cybersecurity issues and risks to businesses in the construction and legal industries.
  • Understand how to proactively plan and prepare for cyberattacks and data breaches and comply with regulatory and contractual requirements relating to information security.
  • Understand how to minimize potential liability through contract provisions and procurement of cyber insurance and how to respond in the event of a cyberattack and/or data breach in order to effectively and efficiently mitigate damages and loss of information.
