Session 2C: Lithium-ion and the Future of Safe Energy Storage (Room 243)

Across the globe, utilities and project developers are installing energy storage systems to reduce peak demand, strengthen the grid and help shore up intermittent renewable energy from wind and solar power plants.  The vast majority of these systems use lithium-ion battery technology due to its relative low-cost in comparison to other commercialized energy storage technologies.  But questions linger about the safety of lithium-ion technology, particularly considering its susceptibility to catch fire.
