John Carey became the Inspector General of Palm Beach County on June 23, 2014. His office oversees 42 separate government entities to include the County, 39 Municipalities, Children’s Services Council and Solid Waste Authority. The Office of Inspector General promotes efficiency and effectiveness in government while preventing and detecting fraud and abuse by auditing, investigating, and providing oversight to government procurements. Mr. Carey has accumulated more than 41 years of government service, in and out of uniform, from the local to the federal level. For the past 17 years he served in the inspector general field. Before coming to Palm Beach County, Mr. Carey was the Inspector General for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Prior to joining DIA, he helped establish the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) serving as its first Deputy IG. Before joining the ODNI he was the Deputy IG of the Marine Corps. Mr. Carey is a retired Marine Corps colonel with occupational specialties in infantry, intelligence, and military police. In 2003, he deployed to the Middle East as the director of intelligence for a Combined Joint Task Force and the U.S. Marine Corps Central Command during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM/Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Mr. Carey also served 10 years as a Lafayette, Indiana, Police Officer. During this law enforcement tenure, Mr. Carey held several leadership positions: from SWAT Commander to Uniform Division Commander, before returning to active duty in the Marine Corps. Mr. Carey is a Certified Inspector General and Certified Inspector General Auditor. He holds a Bachelors of Arts degree (cum laude) from the Grace College and a Masters of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He also attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, the Federal Executive Institute, and the Kellogg School of Management. Mr. Carey is on the National Board of the Association of Inspectors General.
