Martin Bergh grew up on a farm at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains in Clanwilliam, the centre of the Rooibos Industry and is today the biggest Rooibos farmer. He is the grandson of Oloff Bergh, who , together with Dr. P. Nortier and H C Ginsberg, were the pioneers of the Rooibos industry and the first commercial farmer of Rooibos. Martin has spent his whole professional life in the Rooibos Industry. After graduating with a B. Sc Agric. degree, he started farming with Rooibos. He was elected Chairman of the Rooibos Tea Control Board which was founded in 1954. The Control Board privatized in 1993 and Rooibos Ltd. was formed. Martin stepped down as Chairman of the Board in 1999, to take up the more executive position of Managing Director of Rooibos Ltd, the market leader and preferred supplier of Rooibos internationally. Martin was elected as the first Chairman of the South African Rooibos Council, whose main function is to oversee product research, as well as the generic marketing of Rooibos and industry related matters.
