CAM MUIR
VICE PRESIDENT
BIG ISLAND TEA

Dr. Cam Muir wears two hats at Big Island Tea: 1) he is an Associate Professor of Biology at University of Hawai`i at Hilo and has taught a wide variety of classes from Introductory Biology to Advanced Graduate level Conservation Genetics over the past 20 years. Camʼs research focus is the interplay between genetic diversity of tea and the ecological diversity of the forest in which the tea grows on the expression of genes that affect the health benefits and taste of tea. With collaborators in Michigan, Cam is presently using DNA sequence data to identify differences in the tens of thousands of beneficial microbes present in soil samples taken from a variety of impacted and revitalized, monoculture and ecologically diverse sites from around Hawai`i Island (“The Big Island”). 2) Camʼs other hat is farm worker, picker, processor, and 1/2 time farm manager.
