Raj started Young Mountain Tea with a deal – if Himalayan communities would grow tea, Raj would setup a company in the US to sell it. At the time, he was in N. India on a Fulbright Fellowship, working to create livelihoods in the mountainous Kumaon region. To learn how to build a sustainable model for tea production, Raj and the local communities partnered with pioneers in the Indian tea industry. After Raj setup Young Mountain Tea in Oregon, the company began offering its mentor’s teas while the Kumaon saplings grew. Two years later, the first Kumaon teas reached US tea cups and it’s been off to the races since. Every tea in the company’s collection plays an important role in shaping a more sustainable future for the Indian tea industry.
