Barton Day currently serves as Cybersecurity Architect under the Deputy Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). He provides subject matter expertise on layered defenses for mobile technologies, service oriented communication, and software engineering practices and principles. He is tasked with simplifying the CMS technology footprint, oversight of system security infrastructure, developing data loss prevention strategies, and exploring opportunities to align emerging security practices with federal standards and the Agency mission. As the Cybersecurity Architect, Mr. Day focuses heavily on innovative technologies, including agile and DevOps system development methodologies, government adoption of Cloud Services, Microsegmentation, Microservices, Encryption, and Identification/Authentication. He attends system design and architectural reviews to evaluate and develop requirements for network topologies, software services, and data protection techniques. Prior to joining CMS, Mr. Day acquired extensive cyber experience which spans over 17 years with roles and responsibilities ranging from network engineering, software development, database administration, and cybersecurity operations. He assists in the design of security requirements for complex projects and provides technical leadership to inter-Agency teams, covering the full spectrum IT solutions from legacy platforms to systems embracing cutting edge technologies. Mr. Day received his Masters of Science in Information Technology in 2006 from the University of Maryland, University College. He is a member of SANS GIAC Advisory Board, CMS Agile software development team, the DevOps initiative, and is a CMS SME for FedRAMP and cloud based systems.
