James Helmberger, P.E. is Principal Engineer – IEM in Omaha Public Power District’s Planning & Strategy area, where he works to help OPPD navigate a changing energy marketplace. Jim has 33 years of experience in the electric power industry – 8 years as an electrical engineering consultant to a diverse clientele, and 25 years in power engineering at the 12th largest (by customers served) U.S. public power utility. His utility background is in substations, protective relaying, SCADA and automation, but also includes experience with T&D, fossil and nuclear power plants, distributed generation / DER, smart grid technologies, communications, NERC compliance, utility-scale renewables / IBR’s and energy storage. Jim has held positions from Design, Senior, and Lead to Manager, Principal and Director of Engineering. He is an occasional speaker on a variety of industry topics at local events, regional conferences and at Creighton University. Jim is a Senior Member of IEEE Power Engineering and Communications Societies, and has been active in the North American Transmission Forum, NERC MRO and SPP Regional Protective Relay Committees, and the NERC SPIDERWG effort. He is a Licensed Professional Electrical Engineer in Nebraska and Iowa and an NCEES MLE & record holder.
