Sam Liles, Ph.D.
Acting Director
DHS I&A Cyber Division
Dr. Samuel Liles is the acting director for DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis Cyber Division, which uses unique DHS data holdings to analyze cyber threats to the .gov domain, state and local networks, and critical infrastructure. He works closely with the leadership of the department’s operational cyber component’s and provides intelligence support for the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center. He teams with department and whole-of-community partners to improve understanding of, and resilience to, cyber threats. Dr. Liles has been an enlisted Marine, law enforcement officer (tribal and county), information security industry leader, professor, and government chief information security officer. He has a doctoral degree in digital forensics and computer systems incident response from Purdue University. He also was a tenured associate professor at Purdue University, where he worked in the Cyberforensics Laboratory, which is affiliated with CERIAS in West Lafayette, Indiana. As an academic, he specialized in information assurance and security as it is applied to analysis of transnational cyber threats and cyber forensics. Dr. Liles also taught at the National Defense University and has lectured at each of the US service war colleges, as well as several foreign war colleges. He has authored numerous books, chapters, journal articles, Amici Curiae, conference proceedings, and is the technical editor on three books. Finally, he serves on the NIST/DOJ-led Organization of Scientific Area Committee (OSAC) for Forensic Science and is a reviewer on several academic journals.
