Post-construction fatality surveys under wind turbines require several layers of simultaneous record keeping, generally divided into search logs, specimen records, and search efficiency and carcass persistence trials. Surveys may occur as frequently as once per day resulting in a significant portion of project costs and energy devoted to maintaining accurate and complete records. Maintaining paper field forms and transcribing data into a digital format is prone to error and requires additional effort to verify data. To reduce costs and increase accuracy and efficiency, TRC uses a suite of four apps (Survey Log, Fatality Log, Searcher Efficiency Trial, and Carcass Persistence Trial) to standardize record keeping across all our post-construction fatality projects, while simultaneously customizing the apps to each project. We will explain how our methodology reduces the time (and cost) needed to make entries, reduces errors and adds capabilities not previously possible, such as instant database backup and storage and near-instant data availability to project managers, clients and regulators. Our apps allow automation and integration when recording GPS coordinates, weather, time, and multimedia records, even recording the azimuth at which images and videos were collected. Methods to ensure field forms are thoroughly and correctly filled out will be shared. The result is reduced cost and a greater proportion of effort directed towards achieving meaningful, actionable results.
