32 - Rethinking Risk Assessment: Adding the 3rd Dimension (Room 28E)

When risk assessments are discussed, the conversation often has several themes. Everyone agrees that risk assessment is helpful for prioritization of their time and safety resources. In addition, most initially will say these assessments are, in theory, “easy.” Often, the conversation then turns to the limitations of the common risk assessment matrixes. The potential severity of an incident usually is fairly easy to determine based upon the amount and/or type of hazardous energy in the environment. The likelihood or probability of an exposure often is a bit more difficult to determine. In this session, we’ll discuss why expanding the matrix concept to include common human factors – those behaviors we all display from time to time – may make it a much more effective tool.
