4 - An Analysis of Ladder Fatalities (Room 29A)

This session shares the findings of an analysis of 356 reports from the NIOSH Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) Program. Ladder use is pervasive in the U.S. workforce, and ladders are involved in a substantial number of fatalities. To reduce the risk of fatal incidents involving ladders, safety professionals must understand the factors contributing to these incidents. In this session, we’ll look at an analysis of 180 incidents in which the fatally injured worker was using a ladder, 164 incidents in which ladder use was a peripheral factor, and 12 incidents in which the victim should have used a ladder but didn’t. We’ll discuss who died, what they were doing, what kinds of ladders were involved, how often faulty ladders were involved, training and unsafe behaviors that led to death.
