The Department of Defense has an increasingly important role in the cyber defense of the United States.  Characteristics of the  operational environment  include:

 FM 3-12, Cyberspace and Electronic Warfare Operations, is the first field manual to include cyberspace, the electromagnetic spectrum, cyberspace operations, electronic warfare operations, and cyberspace electromagnetic activities together in one doctrine publication with the associated roles and responsibilities.  Included in this version of FM 3-12 are fundamental principles, tactics, and a refined military decision making process table for cyberspace and electronic warfare operations. 

FM 3-12 is the result of a long process which included several working groups to properly vet and present technical capabilities for a common understanding.  The fields of cyberspace and electronic warfare operations are ever-changing, FM 3-12 provides a baseline for commanders and staffs to use for operations and training at the tactical echelons.  FM 3-12 is on a yearly update cycle to support the changing nature of these subjects. 

The session will touch on key topics addressed in FM 3-12 including:

  • The electromagnetic spectrum
  • Cyberspace operations
  • Electronic warfare operations
  • Cyberspace electromagnetic activities with the associated roles and responsibilities
