S3 | Section 504 Coordinators: Best Practices for Staying Legally Compliant (Room Chantilly West)

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires that school districts appoint a compliance coordinator. This person is responsible for ensuring compliance with Section 504 for the district and is typically in charge of investigating claims of disability discrimination and harassment. In this fast-paced presentation, school attorneys Betsey Helfrich and Sarah Schmanke will examine the basics of what is required of Section 504 compliance coordinators, including a review of the requirements for producing and publishing a legally sound notice of nondiscrimination and for investigating complaints of disability discrimination and harassment. You’ll leave with tools and tips for conducting comprehensive investigations and drafting defensible reports in response to harassment and discrimination complaints.
