I6 | Legally-Defensible Goal-Writing: An Interactive Workshop (Room De Soto)

23 Apr 18
1:00 PM - 2:15 PM

Tracks: IDEA

The IDEA mandates that schools identify the needs of students with disabilities and then draft individualized goals designed to ensure that they are appropriately making progress in those areas of need. A large percentage of special education litigation involves a legal analysis of IEP goals. Using a unique, color-coded approach, Attorney Erin D. Gilsbach will identify the essential components of a well written, legally defensible goal, demonstrating the importance of each component through a discussion of real-life litigation and case law examples. She’ll point out common goal-writing mistakes and address the  positive impact that well-written goals can have on progress monitoring. You will leave this hands-on lesson with a self-audit IEP checklist and a truly memorable understanding of the legal-defensibility aspects of goal-writing.
