Tracks: Behavior

Speaker(s): Beverley H. Johns

How can districts reduce the number of suspensions in schools? Consultant Bev Johns has developed a process to assist school district personnel in developing alternatives to keep students in school, the DETECT model: Describe the behavior in specific observable terms; determine whether the student understands the Expectations for acceptable behavior; address whether the acceptable behavior has been Taught to the student; examine the Earned privileges available to students for engaging in appropriate behavior; outline the logical Consequences, for when the student has engaged in unacceptable behaviors; and Track the data to determine that the process is effective and reducing the number of suspensions. You’ll leave this session with strategies you can share in your district.
