Taming Chinese Tea Names (Room N234)

13 Jun 17
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Tracks: Diverse Tea Business Topics

This class is for anyone who has ever wondered how to say "Bai Mudan" or why Pu'er is also spelled Pu-erh. The answer to both questions has to do with Pinyin, the system of romanization used to convert Chinese characters (or writing) to English spelling. We will cover the earlier system, Wade-Giles, and how it is still confusing people in the tea industry. We will learn why one tea can be written 6 different ways and which one is the right way. We will also cover pronunciation of most tea names that you would come across in the tea industry today.
