The electrical energy arterial collection system installed during construction of a wind farm requires expertise in selection and installation of that product which is forever hidden from view, but none-the-less is exposed to a host of operational and environmental conditions that exposes the wind farm to serious downtime and expense. MV Connection points designed into the web of collection is critical to the life of the farm, and best practices followed during design, cable selection, component selection, construction implementation and ongoing maintenance of medium voltage connections and splices is crucial to the well-being and longevity of the overall plant. Proper cable selection includes meeting the environmental requirements, but also verifiable manufacturing standards and process, factory testing, and delivery. Connecting components for the cable must also meet the application and the industry manufacturing standards, including advanced materials to meet most current standards for repair. Constructor competency must include training, inspection and the highest of standards of components. Maintenance must be specific to the voltage requirement and balanced with a well defined program of inspection and monitoring. Repairs must be performed using newest industry standards and by trained installers. Manufacturer representatives of all components and cable must be involved in any training.
