Debunking Cable Failure Myths and Implementing AWEA Recommended Practices for Greater Reliability (Room Sunset IV - V)

Understanding how cable systems fail is one of the key elements to ensure collector system reliability. Insight into empirical evidence and lessons learned after profiling over 150 million feet of installed 5kV to 500kV class cable systems will debunk some common theories and myths associated with solid dielectric cable failure. This insight has led to a greater understanding with product selection, system design, installation practices, commissioning, system operation, assessment of aging infrastructure, and repair and replacement strategies. Data and case studies based on over a decade of experience at wind farm cable systems will be presented from the perspectives of owner/operators, a cable reliability consultant, and a cable system product supplier.
