The Internet of Things, or IoT, is one of the most rapidly growing areas in the technology world. A simple search of articles in IEEE Xplore shows that IoT articles are increasing exponentially, doubling in quantity nearly every two years. IoT solutions are being explored in domains as diverse as agriculture, health care, manufacturing, transportation, and more. However, the defense domain does not appear to be a leader in adopting IoT technology, as is the case with many breakthrough technologies. If this is true, what are the reasons for this? Can they be overcome? What might be the IoT “killer app” that will accelerate the development and deployment of more IoT solutions in the defense space? This panel will consist of senior leaders from industry, military labs, and military program offices. This panel will explore the questions above, identify the key roadblocks and enablers for IoT in defense, and offer suggestions for what areas of defense are most amenable to IoT solutions.
