The session will discuss the nature of defensive cyberspace operations (DCO) and how it differs from traditional cybersecurity, as well as discuss the purpose and objectives of DCO.  Additionally, the session will examine the factors that must be considered when planning DCO, different methods of defense, and the various phases of DCO execution.  Within the discussion of DCO execution, the session will examine the seven activities that constitute USCYBERCOM’s defensive methodology.  As part of that methodology, the session presentation will look at the planning activities that must occur to enable synchronization and economy of force and capabilities necessary to conduct successful DCO.  The session will also discuss the various activities that may be performed to prepare the operating environment in order to provide defenders maximum advantage.  Finally, the session will examine the necessary activities that must occur during periods of direct engagement with the adversary to successfully achieve DCO objectives.  The session will conclude with a question and answer period to provide the audience an opportunity to gain clarity on aspects of the presentation.
