2016 WOCN® Society & CAET Joint Conference

(PP203) Cybersecurity & HIPAA: Breaching Borders (Room 510)

05 Jun 16
2:50 PM - 3:50 PM

Tracks: Professional Practice

It seems that we cannot go a week without another front page headline about a data breach. Sophisticated cyber criminals have put healthcare in the crosshairs due to the wealth (literally) of information available and relatively easy to obtain. Other industries have implemented rigorous programs to protect consumers from identity theft, but healthcare lags behind... instead of developing standardized guidelines regulators penalize. This system of penalty was for a bygone era, no longer are the days of if you experience a breach, its when you will get breached again.

During this session, Jen will walk the audience through the basics of cybersecurity and HIPAA as they specifically pertain the the practice of the WOC professional. She will use real case examples, inviting participation from the audience, to delve into the every day occurrences that present risks of cyber insecurity. She'll also highlight the aspects of HIPAA regarding security, and elements of the Privacy Rule that may have more impact on the WOC nurse than others in healthcare.

Together, we'll learn a few simple steps we can take to protect ourselves, our organization, and our patients.
