Strive to Survive: The Art of Survival in the 21st Century (Room 240)

Tracks: Risk Reduction and Management

How do people normally react to workplace accidents and other disasters? What kinds of behavior can we anticipate, and how can we best manage people in crisis? A knowledge of human behavior is a vital part of any safety program. Using lessons drawn from the presenter’s personal experiences with fires and emergencies, this session illustrates the genetic and social influences that determine our reactions to stress. Examine how the milling process, the inhibiting factor, stress zones and task commitment affect evacuation patterns, alarm response and drill effectiveness. Learn how people can become less “rescue-reliant” and more capable of successfully managing others in an accident or catastrophic event.
