Ray Matulka, PhD, director of toxicology for the Burdock Group, explains how the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is contemplating finding new “legal homes” for nearly 500 pet food ingredients defined by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. While CVM has announced it will place approximately 250 of the ingredients under generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status, the remaining 250 would have to be supported with food additive petitions from pet food manufacturers. Matulka describes this phenomenal regulatory oversight, the methods available to adhere to federal law to preserve the use of these ingredients and the future for manufacturers who react too slowly.
