Plumbing engineers should not be designing and specifying containment backflow preventer systems, also referred to as “premise isolation” or “point-of-service” systems, which are those systems required on domestic lines by the water purveyor to isolate the premises from all other water subscribers in the public water system. Both cost considerations and risk assessments make this an inappropriate task for plumbing engineers. This presentation will provide expert testimony, historic facts, hydraulic performance data, and even financial data to illuminate this. Participants will learn about the “net” flood rate of an indoor 4-inch RPZ, the “new” risk of underground vaults, the event or danger to design for, and the financial cost of any indoor containment BPA.
