The 2017 China policy banning mixed paper imports and subsequent implementation of a 0.5 percent contamination standard for recovered fiber imports have had dramatic impacts throughout the recovered paper markets. American Forest & Paper Association, in collaboration with MIT, leveraged ongoing research into the consequences of change in paper recovery and recovered paper utilization to develop a white paper that examines the cascading effects of the China policy. In this session, learn about how the MIT research helped to quantify the grades affected and to predict potential future recovered fiber consumption by U.S. producers. In addition, hear approaches recommended by subject matter experts to address the volume gap for recovered fiber that has previously been exported to China and how the industry is adapting to the change.
