George Fahey, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the University of Illinois, discusses the importance of the role of beta-1,3/1,6 glucans in pet animal nutrition and health. Beta-glucans are now recognized as a functional dietary fiber with a number of important roles related to pet animal nutrition and health. Eight studies have been published with dogs and cats fed these glucans, and encouraging results have been obtained in the areas of bone and joint health, digestive health, skin and coat health, immunomodulation and obesity control. Dietary formulations prepared for dogs and cats could benefit from their presence in many instances.
