Recognizing Sepsis on the Street (Room Chesapeake ABC)

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. Common signs and symptoms include feverincreased heart rateincreased breathing rate, and confusion.  In the very young, old, and people with a weakened immune system, there may be no symptoms of a specific infection and the body temperature may be low or normal, rather than high. Early sepsis recognition in the prehospital setting is a life saver. Regulated early administration of IV fluids and possibly antibiotics will significantly lower mortality rates in these patients. This session will demonstrate how to recognize subtle signs and symptoms usually missed in pediatric and adult sepsis patients, and how to treat these patients successfully.
