Lakehurst (N.J.) School District has implemented a number of LEGO-based programs to meet and exceed federal and state mandates for serving students with special needs in the least restrictive learning environment. These programs have also led to improved school climate and student performance. Research has demonstrated that LEGO interventions and programs improve social skills through motivating students to initiate social contact and sustain interaction with peers, as well as to overcome symptoms of aloofness and rigidity that often are associated with autism. Here, you'll learn about professional development and funding procurement for program development that improves the lives of individuals who are challenged with special needs, including autism/PDD, and also provides ancillary benefits to typically developing learners. Those who are familiar and comfortable in their current approach to LEGO-based therapy and interventions also will learn more advanced techniques.
