Impact of Flushing in High-Manganese Re-Phosphorized IF Steel With Change in Addition Pattern and Slag Killing in the RH Process

High-strength interstitial-free (IF) steel is used in skin panel applications in car outer bodies. While casting this grade, there is a huge clogging tendency in the submerged-entry nozzle (SEN), frequently accompanied by mold level fluctuations (MLFs) and stopper drops (called "flushing") leading to increased downgradation of slabs. In order to cater to the clogging issue, the addition practice of all ferroalloys in the RH process and the slag behavior (Fe(total)% and slag MnO%) were re-examined. Subsequently, the changes in manganese metal addition pattern, oxygen blowing sequence and pre-conditioning of slag led to significant improvements in SEN clogging and slab downgradation for flushing.
