Besides reflecting upon the challenges faced during the commissioning of India’s largest blast furnace, such as new workforce, dislodging of stove silica refractory, quality and supply issues for integrated the start-up of coke and sinter units, hot blast failure, etc., this paper talks about the efficiency with which challenges were overcome, leading to a successful blowing in and ramp up of production higher than the designed capacity. Several digital projects for hot metal quality prediction and improving the operational efficiency were implemented, which helped Tata Steel Ltd., Kalinganagar become the only Indian manufacturing plant to be included in the list of the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network.
