Reduction of Transverse Corner Cracks During Continuous Casting of Slabs (Room 208 A)

The effect of secondary cooling practice on the formation of transverse corner cracks during continuous casting was studied. A three-dimensional solidification model coupled with hot ductility experiments was employed to develop optimal secondary cooling practices in order to reduce the occurrence of transverse corner cracks. This paper will discuss the application of the optimized secondary cooling practices to casting at SSAB Iowa and the resulting improved surface quality in as-cast slabs and finished products.
