A quantitative method was developed to characterize boron nitride inclusions in 9-12 wt% Cr heat resistant steels by automated scanning electron microscopy. The method was used to study the evolution of these inclusions during heat treatment at 1150, 1200, and 1250°C. Thermodynamic modeling was also used to predict the temperature and composition ranges over which boron nitrides are stable. The observed effects were qualitatively consistent with previous studies on these steels, but small differences in steel composition led to important shifts in the temperatures at which boron nitrides are stable.
