Novel Method for Stirring BOF Melts in Conjunction With Slag Splashing (Room 205 A)

Basic oxygen furnace bottom stirring is used in many parts of the world because of the several benefits it brings to the operation. However, it is not prevalent in the U.S. because slag splashing is a common practice; and when used in conjunction with bottom stirring, it can cause poor reliability and blockage of the tuyeres. This paper discusses a newly developed tuyere that can help eliminate these issues while maintaining the advantages of stirring operation. The new tuyere achieves this objective by providing tuyere operational flexibility using advanced controls, thereby maintaining the stirring effectiveness of the tuyere for longer furnace campaigns.
