Virtual Reality Simulator for Portable Fire Extinguisher Training (Room 209 B)

Fires are an ever-present hazard in the steel industry. Fire extinguishers are only helpful if workers are sufficiently trained to assess when and how to use them. This paper discusses the development of a virtual reality (VR) fire safety simulator to provide interactive training to steel industry workers. The simulator introduces trainees to the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep), and lets them put out fires using a VR headset and controllers. The simulator includes realistic fire behaviors and combines interactive 3D models with 360-degree videos to provide a realistic, immersive and engaging training tool.
