For some fracture critical applications, the requirements for the internal quality of steel plates, especially heavy-gauge plates, are very stringent. To ensure sound internal quality and performance, some grades require not only ultrasonic testing, but also through-thickness tensile testing (Z-test). One of the common defects in heavy-gauge hot-rolled steel plates is hydrogen embrittlement. When the hydrogen content in a steel plate reaches a certain level, it can cause microcracks, blisters and flaking. In the present study, the effects of rolling and cooling processes on hydrogen removal in a low-carbon microalloyed steel were analyzed.
