The scope of the paper includes a description of how radar expansion measurements in reheating steel furnaces enables adjustment of the heat transfer model. The novelty is to measure the absolute expansion of slabs through furnace walls. The method enables model adjustment without temperature loggers and enables on-line adaption/feedback without interfering production significantly. A system is fully implemented at Sandvik Material Technology and partially at SSAB. The systems are used to optimize heating, control temperature of slabs, and determine deviations between computed and measured expansion. Thereby, the model is faster adjusted due to furnace degradation, burning variations, fuel and atmosphere changes, and other causes.
