A new sampling method has been developed to produce less-than-2-mm-thick strips that simulate the solidification conditions of the direct twin-roll casting process (CASTRIPĀ®). Using this newly developed sampling method, high-Si steel samples were produced. Using secondary dendrite arm spacing, the sample solidification cooling rate is calculated to be approximately 1,700 K/second. The dendrite structures and calculated solidification cooling rates are shown to be similar to those observed in the commercial CASTRIP process. The sampling method is useful for rapid prototyping and evaluation of new alloys for the vertical twin-roll strip casting process.
