Prediction and Validation of Macrosegregation in Large Steel Slab Samples Using a New Mesoscale Model and XRF Measurements (Room Virtual)

The occurrence of centerline segregation in continuously cast steel slabs has been predicted using a new 3D mesoscale solute transport model in combined with a 1D macroscale heat transfer model. The 3D mesoscale model considers the effects of solute partitioning as well as solute transport at the scale of casting. The predictions are validated against large-scale measurements of solute distribution via x-ray fluorescence. The influence of processing parameters on centerline segregation is examined through a parametric study. The results are useful for alleviating macrosegregation during the continuous casting of advanced high-strength steel grades.
