This presentation reviews maintenance performance and financial results of International Steel Group (ISG), including substantial reductions in maintenance cost and headcount. ISG purchased LTV Steel’s assets in bankruptcy court. It turned failing businesses into profitable enterprises by changing the management style. ISG transformed LTV’s hierarchical management into a learning, empowerment organization. Union-management relationships improved exponentially. Together, they became business leaders. They trusted their people’s experience and potential. The resulting empowerment energized people. Shared responsibilities and collaboration led to dramatically improved maintenance. With the exact same business, the same mills and people, ISG turned bankrupt steel plants into lean, valuable properties.
