Numerical simulation of the solidification front and mushy zone in continuous slab casters require increased mesh refinement for reliable evaluation of diffusive and transport relations. This paper discusses the potential utilizing adaptive mesh refinement in continuous caster simulations to provide an economical means of increasing the solution accuracy along the solidification front. A Eulerian-multi-phase volume of fluid numerical model of a half-mold domain was developed, using the Simcenterâ„¢ STAR-CCM+â„¢ software, and simulations were conducted for both steady-state and transient conditions. Evaluations of the simulation performance and methods of designating appropriate refinement criteria are conducted, and simulation results are compared against shell measurement data.
