The Effects of Non-Metallic Inclusions on Charpy V-Notch Toughness (Room 205 B)

Non-metallic inclusions are generally considered to be detrimental to the mechanical properties of steel. However, different properties of steel are affected differently by types, morphologies, sizes, density and distribution. Since inclusions cannot be entirely eliminated from the steel, the inclusions need to be engineered to minimize their harmful effects. The accepted and standardized methods of inclusion indexing are inadequate and hence preclude their use for engineering analysis. This paper provides a review of the available methods for quantifying inclusions, discusses the relationship between these methods, and describes the nature of inclusion-matrix interaction and its relationship to Charpy V-notch toughness of steel.
