The Formation and Distribution of Ti(C,N) to Prevent Blast Furnace Refractory Wear (Room 201 A)

Titanium-bearing ore has long been charged into blast furnaces to prevent carbonaceous refractory wear, thought to be due to the formation of Ti(C,N) scaffolds. While the formation of TiN has been investigated in conditions analogous to blast furnaces, the thermodynamics of TiC under similar conditions is not agreed upon. The formation and dissolution of TiC and TiN particles in a molten Fe-Csat system is viewed in-situ using high-temperature confocal microscopy. A novel method to measure wear rate is used to compare the effects of carbides and nitrides.
