Limiting Bainite Formation by Refinement in Nb-Microalloyed Hot-Rolled Sections (Room 208 B)

Production of high-strength niobium-microalloyed structural sections is achieved by rolling above traditional temperatures employed in thermomechanical processing. Niobium intended to retard static recrystallization and favor grain refinement during hot rolling, concurrent with reductions in manganese and vanadium contents, has been employed to achieve target ferrite-pearlite microstructures and achieve mechanical property targets. Niobium, in combination with other additions that retard primary ferrite formation (Mn, Cr, Mo), is balanced in subject alloys to ensure the desired microstructure upon air cooling from finish rolling temperatures and is partially compensated by a reduction in austenite grain size.
