Iron- and steelmaking are processes that produce steel from iron ore and/or scrap, which involves various levels of complexity - from continuous to batch operation; from physical deformation to chemical reactions; and from reduction to oxidation; just to name a few. Every day plant managers, process engineers and operators must make timely decisions to address production, quality and cost issues that are often contradicting each other, while adhering to a high standard of safety and environmental requirements. It is not an easy task, even with assistance of today’s advanced process control systems.
