Successful Integration of Waste Management Systems in Sustainability Curriculum (Room Exhibit Hall Innovation Cafe)

Sustainability in higher education very rarely incorporates waste management and sustainable waste management practices in the curriculum of courses or offers courses on waste management as part of a degree plan.If it is included, it is often unsuccessful or one small section in a larger, broader course on sustainability. Waste management curriculum — related to textile waste, plastic disposal, hazardous waste disposal, etc. — needs to be included in higher education sustainability curriculum to produce well-rounded sustainability professionals. One way to achieve this is via extensive coursework examining a circular economy and life cycle analyses.Providing students with experience looking at how businesses can produce less waste and be more efficient is one way to incorporate waste management successfully. The question is how we create impactful coursework that gives students experience in promoting circular economy practices and critical thinking.
