102 - Safety in the Public Sector – Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs (Room 362B/E)

Workplace safety in the public sector is an issue that affects everyone. Different from the private sector, where the costs of safety failures can be transferred only to customers and shareholders, public-sector costs can be transferred to a much wider segment of the population through taxes, fees and service issues. A government cannot be efficient, effective or trusted to care for the safety of the public when it does not engage in strong safety policy, procedure and practice; as well as assign clear authority and responsibility for safety inside government at all levels. The National Safety Council’s Government and Public Sector Division is leading the council’s efforts to eliminate preventable death in the public sector. This interactive discussion, presented by G&PS division members, will explore the issues, approaches and successes that are moving this agenda forward.
