POST 2 | Post-Symposium: Legal and Ethical Issues Involving Paraeducator Employment, Training, and Supervision (Room Senators Lecture Hall)

School districts rely on paraeducators to support the instruction of students with disabilities. Although the paraeducator role is to assist in providing special education and related services, without sufficient clarity of responsibilities, many paraeducators are given direct responsibility for the provision of special education to children with disabilities. Serious ethical and legal questions are raised when paraeducators perform tasks for which they may not be adequately trained or receive inadequate supervision. In this post-Institute symposium, Dr. Kent Gerlach provides practical information to enhance the skills of administrators to effectively train and supervise paraeducators. He will also share criteria for developing appropriate job descriptions, discuss recent legislative action impacting paraeducators, and address professional and ethical guidelines.
